Open Source Software Empowers

This cartoon reminds me of the empowerment I feel thanks to open source software. Open source software is a great equalizer because it turns old junk into powerful tools. The laptop I'm using right now is an antique by many standards, but thanks to open source software it's extremely capable. Open source software creates opportunities for the development and the expression of genius that might otherwise be hindered by a lack of resources.

New Partner Inspires and Educates Kids

The Headwaters Science Center of Bemidji has agreed to be a test environment for the development of our new software. In the coming months we will be integrating a server into their network of roughly a half dozen computers running a mix of Windows XP and OS X. This will give them faster and simpler access to their files, reassurance that regular backups are being performed, and an easy way to control access to specific files.

New Software On the Way

Our first software product is in the pipeline! It doesn't have a name yet, but its focus is on increasing productivity and reducing costs for companies with small to medium size networks. Software updates and and file backups are automated, so employees can spend more time focused on their jobs. Security updates are a critical part of smooth work flow, but installing them shouldn't take employees away from their work. Files are backed up on site for convenience and off site in case of disaster or theft. Off site backups are securely encrypted to prevent sensitive files from getting out.

Plans for the Future

Stinar.net is built on open source software and a firm belief in open source principles. It would not exist without the empowerment that open source provides and its goal is to empower others through the use of open source. In the coming months, expect to find articles and tutorials explaining the principles and practical application of open source.

Re-upgrade

First, I upgraded the site to Drupal 6. Then, I rolled back to Drupal 5. Now, I'm back to Drupal 6. The site is still coming back slowly—but it is coming back. And hopefully there will be a podcast too!
